Case study: expert engineer assessment of a spreader lifting beam

Structural assessment of a below-the-hook lifting beam

Case study based on an expert-engineer inspection of a spreader lifting beam at one of our clients. Alongside the technical report for high-capacity below-the-hook equipment, the work connects equipment identification, conservation status, welds, tests, declared use regime, and residual-life assessment.

Applied technical protocol

  1. 01

    Document review

Collection of model, year, capacity, classification, use declarations, and available history to frame the equipment and its operating regime.

  2. 02

    Structural examination

Detailed visual examination of the structure, accessible areas, connections, nuts, bolts, pins, and working components.

  3. 03

    Welds and NDT

Magnetic-particle testing on welded joints, with magnetization in approximately perpendicular directions and overlap of test zones.

  4. 04

    Technical tests

Review of static and dynamic tests: no cracks, permanent deformation, coating flaking, loosened connections, or damage affecting function and safety.

  5. 05

    Residual-life calculation

Analysis of load spectrum, declared cycles, and utilization factors to estimate spent life and remaining service period under the applicable normative method.

  6. 06

    Outcome

Final technical report with suitability judgement, operating requirements, planned periodic visual examinations, and future NDT with expert-engineer inspection.

Final requirements

The report concludes that, based on the checks performed, the assigned classification, and ISO 12482-1 references, there are no reasons preventing use of the spreader lifting beam, provided the stated technical requirements are followed.

  • Surveillance and monitoring of elements most exposed to wear during production activity.
  • Review of the assessment if load intensity or lifting-operation frequency changes.
  • Annual general visual examination of the equipment by an expert technician, with reference to UNI ISO 9927-1 point 5.2.1.
  • NDT after 3 years with concurrent expert-engineer inspection and verification of operating conditions, with reference to UNI ISO 9927-1 point 5.2.2.
